What is Addiction?

Communities across the United States are being ravaged by addiction, and Reno has not been left unscathed. The effects of addiction on the community as a whole can be detrimental. But, what is addiction? This is a valid question that should be explored. Addiction is a complex, chronic disease that is characterized by the compulsive seeking, use, and cravings for drugs and alcohol, regardless of negative results. These negative results can range from loss of job, friction within the family unit, and flunking out of school to arrests, overdose, and even permanent damage to an individual’s health and wellness.

With addiction to these substances comes an intense physical and psychological dependence on them. Addiction to drugs and alcohol alters the brain’s structure. The effects that these substances can have on the reward system in the brain can be extremely detrimental to the individual. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that the brain produces and it is responsible for many different functions. It acts as the reward center in the brain, and it also plays a role in memory, mood, attention as well as other functions. When using substances, the production of dopamine can be altered, resulting in the brain’s dependence on the substance to function properly. As this occurs, detox in Reno may be needed.

Drug Addiction Statistics in Reno

Rehab in Reno is something that can benefit the lives of a large number of individuals within the community. According to renogov.org, EMS and the Reno County coroner began using a tracking system known as ODMAP in 2021. Within the first year, there were 325 suspected overdoses in the county, 19 of which were fatal.

During this first year of tracking, the majority of these involved alcohol poisoning. This tracking system also identified the prevalence of dual diagnosis in Reno. Approximately 50% of all of the ER visits from overdose mentioned a co-occurring mental health condition. Having the proper care of rehab in Reno can help treat addiction as well as any mental health conditions that may be present as well.

How Can Rehab in Reno Help Treat Addiction?

Addiction is a disease. Just like any other disease, it can require medical intervention and treatment. Rehab in Reno can provide this much-needed care to begin the process of healing and recovery. Going to rehab is the starting point in which many crucially necessary skills can be gained. These skills are implemented to aid in making better choices that can help to prevent relapse.

Different therapeutic approaches can help with this. The emotional dysregulation that often leads to using drugs and alcohol can be managed, and healthier coping skills can be used. These skills are essential for maintaining a clean and sober lifestyle long term.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a proven method that helps individuals identify unhealthy and dysfunctional behaviors and thoughts that may lead to using drugs and alcohol. Changing these negative thoughts and behaviors into more healthy and productive ones helps to prevent relapse and further impacts.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is another widely used form of therapy to aid individuals who feel emotions intensely to learn how to make it through them without using substances to cope.

What is Rehab in Reno Like?

Many people who struggle with substance abuse wonder what rehab in Reno is like. Many rehabs offer different daily activities, amenities, and therapies that are geared toward helping to create a solid start and foundation for long-term recovery. The healing process begins with a detox protocol that removes the substances from the body, safely.

Withdrawal symptoms from drugs and alcohol can be excruciating as well as dangerous. Detox in Reno helps individuals to feel more comfortable while simultaneously providing medical monitoring to prevent complications and dangerous effects that withdrawal symptoms can have.

After detox, therapeutic approaches help these individuals learn the helpful and necessary coping skills that help to maintain recovery. During a rehab program, the individual seeking recovery from addiction participates in proven and beneficial therapies to learn and begin implementing skills to stay away from substances.

Rehab in Reno also consists of identifying and treating any potential mental health conditions. Often, individuals who struggle with addiction also struggle with mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. Treating these conditions is crucial to avoiding and preventing relapse.

Dual diagnosis in Reno is a prevalent and treatable condition. Having the right care can help to properly address all facets of addiction, as well as teach the necessary, positive coping skills that will help maintain recovery.

Where do I begin.. I was hesitant to start this program because I have never experienced anything like this before, but having come to Sierra Health + Wellness (Reno) was an experience like no other. I was instantly welcomed with loving arms and good spirit. Initially, I was only able to stay 15 days because of my insurance, but because of the environment and hope I felt, I chose to stay 30. The staff counselors, techs (big shout out to Wiley!), nurses, chefs, directors, etc went above and beyond to make my stay incredibly comfortable and loving. They went above and beyond anytime I needed them. They hear you, spend time with you, listen to you. You don't just feel like "another one of them." The group sessions are so insightful and you can share your voice with no judgment and they were fun. I truly miss the home but don't want to go back for the reasons I was there in the first place. We had outings, game days, walks and holiday group activities that were an absolute blast! I loved every moment. If this place doesn't inspire you to a better life, I don't know what will. This program will highly exceed expectations. Big hugs!!!
