TREATMENTS

Our Treatment Goal for Patients: Recovery for Life

Dual Diagnosis Care

Sierra Health + Wellness centers provide dual diagnosis care, which is a treatment approach that addresses both mental health disorders and substance use disorders simultaneously. This integrated treatment is crucial because these conditions often occur together, and treating one without the other can be ineffective. Our dual diagnosis care typically involves a combination of therapy, medication management, counseling, and support groups, tailored to meet the individual’s specific needs. This holistic approach improves overall well-being, reduces the risk of relapse, and promotes long-term recovery.

Medication Assisted Treatment

Medication assisted treatment (MAT) at Sierra Health + Wellness Centers involves the use of FDA-approved medications, in combination with counseling and behavioral therapies, to treat substance use disorders. This approach is primarily used to manage addiction to opioids, such as heroin and prescription pain relievers, but it may also be used for alcohol use disorders. The medications used in MAT help to normalize brain chemistry, block the euphoric effects of alcohol and opioids, relieve physiological cravings, and stabilize body functions without the negative effects of the abused drugs. Our MAT programs are designed to provide a comprehensive, individualized approach to recovery, supporting both physical and mental health.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

At Sierra Health + Wellness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is employed as a core therapeutic approach. CBT is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on identifying and restructuring negative thoughts and behavior patterns. The goal is to help individuals develop more positive thinking that can lead to healthier behaviors and coping strategies. During our programs, CBT is used to treat a range of issues including anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and other mental health disorders. Therapy sessions typically involve working with a therapist to recognize dysfunctional thoughts, understand their effects on emotions and behavior, and learn practical skills to change these thought patterns. This approach helps patients gain better control over their behaviors and emotions, promoting recovery and improving overall mental health

Brainspotting

Brainspotting at Sierra Health and Wellness is a therapeutic method used to help patients process and recover from emotional and psychological trauma. Brainspotting is based on the premise that where you look affects how you feel, and it utilizes the patient’s visual field to find spots that help access unprocessed trauma in the brain. During a Brainspotting session, therapists guide patients to focus on specific eye positions that correlate with these emotional experiences. This process is believed to tap into the body’s natural self-scanning capacity to heal itself, facilitating the identification and processing of underlying trauma. This therapy is often integrated with other treatment modalities to support recovery in individuals dealing with a wide range of psychological issues, including stress, anxiety, and PTSD.

Trauma-Informed Care in California

Our trauma informed care is about recognizing and responding to the effects of all types of trauma. This approach integrates a thorough understanding of the prevalence and impact of trauma in the lives of individuals seeking help. The core principles of trauma informed care include safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment. At Sierra Health + Wellness, our staff is trained to recognize signs of trauma in our clients and to provide care in a way that avoids re-traumatization. The treatment strategies are designed to be sensitive to the trauma experiences of individuals, providing a supportive environment that promotes healing and recovery. This approach ensures that the care plans are not only tailored to treat the symptoms but also address the root causes of distress, facilitating a more effective and comprehensive healing process.

Relapse Prevention

Relapse prevention at Sierra Health + Wellness is an integral part of our treatment programs, especially for clients recovering from substance use disorders. This strategy involves educating individuals about the dynamics of relapse, helping them to identify and manage triggers, and developing coping skills to maintain sobriety. The approach typically includes cognitive-behavioral techniques to change harmful thought patterns, stress management skills, and lifestyle changes to support recovery. Group therapy and individual counseling are also crucial components, providing a support network and a safe space to discuss challenges and successes. We may also incorporate other supportive measures such as mindfulness, physical wellness activities, and aftercare planning to strengthen each individual’s resilience and ability to live a sober life.

Family Therapy

Our family therapy is vibrant and interactive, designed to foster recovery and rebuild relationships. These sessions include a variety of activities such as role-playing scenarios, group discussions, and educational workshops. Each activity is chosen to help family members practice new communication techniques.  We introduce coping strategies that family members can use to deal with challenges effectively. Additionally, these sessions emphasize the importance of each family member’s role in the recovery journey, highlighting how their interactions and support can influence positive outcomes.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based psychological treatment designed to help individuals manage intense emotions and harmful behaviors. Developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan in the late 1980s, DBT combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness practices derived from Buddhist traditions. The therapy’s primary aim is to teach people skills to cope with stress, regulate emotions, and improve relationships with others.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing in California Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a therapeutic technique widely employed at recovery centers to help individuals struggling with addiction and other behavioral issues. Through motivational interviewing in California, clients can work through their fears and unlock their potential change in a non-judgmental and compassionate environment that typically won’t take control of their recovery journey with the empowering, non-judgmental support of motivational interviewing.

Mindfulness Therapy

Mindfulness therapy involves practices that focus on the “here and now”. Clients learn to pay attention to their thoughts and feelings without judgment. At our California Center for Mindfulness and CBT, therapists guide individuals through exercises that increase awareness and acceptance of their emotions. In mindfulness-based therapy, practices such as breathing exercises and guided imagery cultivate a state of focused relaxation. These techniques foster resilience by promoting a balanced mental state. We recognize the importance of blending mindfulness with other therapeutic methods and incorporate them into our comprehensive treatment plans.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) represents a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy that emphasizes acceptance and mindfulness strategies. This approach aims to increase psychological flexibility, allowing individuals to engage fully in present actions and values, regardless of unwanted thoughts and feelings. Moreover, ACT doesn’t just help manage symptoms—it transforms one’s relationship with distressing thoughts and emotions.

Group Therapy

Our group therapy sessions bring together individuals who understand our client’s struggles, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support. Where do I begin.. I was hesitant to start this program because I have never experienced anything like this before, but having come to Sierra Health + Wellness (Reno) was an experience like no other. I was instantly welcomed with loving arms and good spirit. Initially, I was only able to stay 15 days because of my insurance, but because of the environment and hope I felt, I chose to stay 30. The staff counselors, techs (big shout out to Wiley!), nurses, chefs, directors, etc went above and beyond to make my stay incredibly comfortable and loving. They went above and beyond anytime I needed them. They hear you, spend time with you, listen to you. You don’t just feel like “another one of them.” The group sessions are so insightful and you can share your voice with no judgment and they were fun. I truly miss the home but don’t want to go back for the reasons I was there in the first place. We had outings, game days, walks and holiday group activities that were an absolute blast! I loved every moment. If this place doesn’t inspire you to a better life, I don’t know what will. This program will highly exceed expectations. Big hugs!!!

Entering treatment at Sierra Health + Wellness (Bangor) was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life!

Everyone one on staff – from the drivers, yard crew, cleaning team, cooks, nurses, counselors, therapists, and management team are some of the most caring and competent people I’ve ever met!

Naturally, I was nervous to enter treatment (largely due to previous issues with the VA), but Sierra Health + Wellness helped restore my hope and completely exceeded my expectations!

If you’re a military veteran that’s ready to find the purpose, direction, and motivation you need to make recovery a lifestyle, from one veteran to another, Sierra Health + Wellness is my first and best option for you.

I’m looking forward to coming back when I’m 90 days sober to visit the Sierra Health + Wellness family as an Alumni in March.

I recently completed the course here. I’ve only been out for three days, but I feel amazing that I’ve ever felt in my life and I feel like I learned more in that week than I’ve ever learned in my life. They gave me the most important tools I’ve ever received. 100% of the staff and patients treated me with kindness.
